Citrix Licensing Changes Require Action Before April 15, 2026
Citrix has announced a mandatory transition to its License Activation Service (LAS), a cloud-based licensing system that replaces traditional file-based licenses for on-premises Citrix environments.
After April 15, 2026, file-based licenses will no longer function. Organizations that do not transition before this date risk licensing failures that may prevent users from accessing applications and virtual desktops.
What Is Changing
The new LAS replaces manual license file management with an automated system that connects your license server to Citrix Cloud. This allows licensing to be managed automatically and eliminates the need to install, update, or maintain license files.
This change is designed to simplify license administration, improve reliability, and support ongoing Citrix platform enhancements.
Many Environments Will Require a Citrix Upgrade
This licensing change affects Citrix on-premises components including:
- Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops
- Citrix NetScaler
- Citrix XenServer
- Related platform services
Compatibility with the LAS depends on both the Citrix platform version and the license server version. Citrix has confirmed that LAS is supported starting with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2203 LTSR and newer releases. Environments running older versions, such as legacy XenApp or XenDesktop deployments, were designed for file-based licensing and will require upgrades to remain fully supported after April 15, 2026.
